  1. theflowershop.ae

This is a locally based company that gets customer service and online ordering. The site is very easy to use and quick. There's no need to register if you don't want to and you have a large choice of flowers and gifts which you can send to recipients.
I used the site to send a birthday treat to a friend. Ordered it the night before and it was delivered at the requested time the next day without any hiccups.
It's definitely the easiest and safest way to have flowers delivered anywhere in the UAE.
My only comment would be that it would be nice to be able to order some of the suggested flower arrangements without the vase. One does not always want a vase with flowers - some people may have enough vases already, so why not make the vase optional and the flower arrangements cheaper?
Other than that, there's naught wrong with this service!

This is a really nice addition to TECOM. Spacious enough inside & outside, the place had a good buzz about it when I popped in for a quick dinner & coffee. The portions were big, the food was tasty, the coffee was good, service was agreeable, and, if you so wish, they do shisha, too (though I didn't try it).
The only #fail was the strawberry milkshake, which tasted too sweet & artificial. The again, why order a strawberry milkshake in the first place, right?
I'd pop in here again for sure.

  3. Mr Cars Auto Maintenance

I took one of our cars down there recently and have to say that I'm very pleased with the result. They certainly did a very thorough job and the interior looks, feels, and smells like new. On the outside, too, they managed to brighten up matters considerably.
While not cheap, I think you certainly get quality & value for your money here and I would recommend this service if you're fed up with the state of your car.

  4. Insurance Market

I wasn't happy with the speed of replies from my current insurance broker when it came to renewing my car insurance, so I decided to give this lot a try.
It was ridiculously easy. I emailed them with my details in the morning and had 5 quotes from good insurance providers in my inbox by early afternoon. Replied to the email with my choice of provider and the necessary documents and it was all done by the end of the day.
Total time spent: About 15 minutes. Plus, I saved a couple of hundred Dirham compared to my previous provider. If you pay them AED 200 more, they even come to collect your car and take it for registration with the RTA.
Here's a service provider that does what it says on the tin and does so fast. Highly recommended. You can find them on the Internet at www.insurancemarket.ae

  5. Wokyo

This new noodle bar only just opened a couple of days ago at the lake level of the J2 Tower (next to the Bonnington Hotel). The design is a bit Wagamama-y, but the menu is more noodle heavy.
Ordering is very easy, just pick your sauce, which type of noodles you want, what proteins you want, and that's it. The chefs will wok it for you and it'll be on your table in a matter of minutes.
You'll also have the option of adding extra protein or vegetable, plus they have a few other dishes available, too.
Service was good & friendly and the place is easy on the pocket, too.
Overall a nice addition to the JLT restaurant scene.

  6. Al Khozama Hotel

Firstly, this is not a five-star hotel as marked here - this is the Al Faisalia's four-star sister hotel, which is located just a few minutes walk from the Al Faisalia (most of it via an air-conditioned walk-way).
Secondly, this is not a bad hotel, but there are a few things worth knowing before staying here: The Internet is rubbish (it comes and goes, but mostly goes). The rooms are a little old fashioned, which includes physical keys for your room door. The thing is, you need to lock the door when you leave your room, but also while you're in the room and don't want to be disturbed, i.e. no door latch here, you literally need to lock yourself in. Most odd.
Also, this is the only place I have stayed in in the entire region that actually offers single rooms with a single bed - not an issue as such, just don't expect a massive bed when you book a single room.
On the bright side: Breakfast is excellent and dinner in their garden was also very nice.
Personally, I could have lived with the old fashioned bits, if only the Internet would have been up to speed. As it is, I would probably not return, however, if you don't need proper Internet during your stay, by all means consider this place.

  7. Lebanos Restaurant and Cafe

Went a couple of evenings ago for tea & shisha. I didn't have any food other than tasting some of my friend's french fries, so can't really comment on the food.
The tea was fine, the rest was just about so, so. Service improved during the course of the evening. The shisha, however, was mediocre at best - I would have certainly expected it to be much better given the fact that the place bills itself as a shisha lounge.
It's a place I'd pop into again, but only if I'm down that end of the world anyway.

  8. Hanoi Cafe

I came here for a lunch a few weeks ago with a friend. The food is very good and fresh. I also really liked their ice teas - both taste-wise as well as size-wise.
Portions are on the big side, so nice for sharing.

I will certainly pop in again for lunch or dinner.

  9. Pei Wei

I went here yesterday for a late lunch/early dinner. Firstly, yes, the food was good. Everything else, though, was a bit 'meh'.
The service system here is odd & doesn't make sense. Everything but the food is plastic. You get plastic glasses for your drinks, eat of plastic plates with, you guessed it, plastic cutlery. While the glasses and plates are reusable, the cutlery isn't, which in my opinion is an unacceptable use of resources. There's no need to be environmentally unfriendly for them in this setting. It's also not easy navigating from the service counter to your table, especially if you want to sit outside. You're carrying your drinks, have to hold on to your bags, perhaps you have a child with you, etc.
All of this would perhaps make sense if this would be a cheap & cheerful fast food joint. It isn't, though. Prices are marginally lower than PF Changs, but so they should be as you've got to do all the work, plus get to eat with plastic cutlery.
While the food was good, the place as a whole was just so-so and I don't think I'll be popping in again. There are plenty of cheaper & more environmentally friendly options out there in this field.

  10. Moti Roti

Having previously visited their other branch in Media City and found the food very nice, I was happy to hear that they recently opened a pop-up restaurant in TECOM in the Al Shafar Tower next to Park.n.Shop. Parking was a bit of an issue, but it's good to combine it with shopping at the supermarket, because you then get an hour's parking free.
I had the beef roti and it was very nice. Spicy and a decent portion for lunch (not too big, not too small). They have other varieties & daily special, too. Plus they do lassi.
If you're in the area at lunch time, I suggest you give this one a try.
