Mr Cars Auto Maintenance
10/04/2014

Definitely pleased with the service at Mr. Cars. I bought a Groupon for AED 325 for SUV detailing (supposed retail: AED 1,200). I had sand in every corner and crack of the inside on account of a few aggressive camping trips this season. Couldn't spot one grain of sand when it was all finished. Weird how your car seems to run better when it's all clean. Just a psychological thing, I know, but it's a good feeling. The place was pretty easy to find, though it seems like it's in the depths of Al Quoz. I had the car there by 9:30 and it was ready by 4:30. Recommended, indeed.

Qube Cafe Resto
27/03/2014

I had such high hopes for Qube. I mean, I drove by it the other day, and it was packed. It's a beautiful glass building, right on the Boulevard by the Pavilion. Disappointing would be an understatement. The menu suffers from an identity crisis, the staff can't be bothered to do anything for you without asking/begging, and the end result that comes out on the plate is what you would expect from a bad counter deli. Pictured is the chicken avocado sandwich. Bread was stale, chicken was dry, and the amount of garlic cream that oozed out of it could be considered a crime. Fries were bland, and the salad tasted a bit funky to me. Furthermore, the shisha was not good at all. And no one bothered to come and check on it or stoke the coals. Anyway, I'm working myself up about it, and I really shouldn't be wasting the time. But if I can save yours, then at least something positive will come out of it...

Tamanya Terrace
09/03/2014

Tamanya Terrace is an often overlooked and underrated spot in the heart of Media City. We came before a concert recently, and caught the sunset, and made a bit of a pre-party out of it. It's an excellent venue, which I bet is popular with the Media City after work crowd. The place got really busy, so I was glad we had a table booking. As crowded as it was, our waitress was on point, and kept up a smile the entire time, despite the rather rigorous demands of our large group. Photo below is the view from the terrace. Definitely worth a visit while the weather is still good.

Spike Bar - Emirates Golf Club
09/03/2014

We had lunch at Spike Bar after a round recently, and it's a great after-golf wind-down spot. I ordered these Sliders, which are 3 different mini-burgers (lamb, beef, and chicken). Everything was going great, until I got to the chicken burger. Took a bite and it was quite pink in the middle. Just one of those things that will make you lose your appetite immediately. I was pretty full, so I didn't make a big fuss about it. I did inform the waiter, just so he could let the chef know. He neither said nor did anything about it. Oh well. The other 2 burgers and sweet potato fries were excellent, so overall, I'll just chalk it up to a minor issue. I wouldn't say this is normal practice, so it wouldn't stop me from eating there again...

Mannaland Korean Restaurant
09/03/2014

I hadn't been to Mannaland in quite a long time, but it was pretty much how I remembered it. Casual, authentic, and reasonably priced, and good service too. We had the beef BBQ grill, which they bring to your table and cook over a portable stove. The meat was tasty and the accompanying sauces offered a nice little flavor kick. Also had the spring onion/shrimp pancake as well as an order of Bibimbab (pictured), which is like a fried rice/veggie bowl with egg. Also, you can get "special teapots" here. I can't disclose what that means, so just ask when you go. All together it was AED 100 per person, and everyone was pretty stuffed. Give it a try for a legit and unique Korean experience.

Q43
02/03/2014

Unexpectedly cool, surprisingly delicious, and absolutely unique. Q43 has opened on (you guessed it) the 43rd Floor of Media One. The views, as you might expect, are fantastic. On one side of the spacious floor, is a dining area which is ambient and well set-up for dinner. The other side is a bustling bar area with several pool tables, a DJ, and lively crowd. The clientele was a young, good looking set, and if I had to guess, at least half of the ladies were cabin crew. As for food, we did a tapas sampling and everything we tried was good. Some of the highlights were the tempura rock shrimp, sautéed mushrooms, wagyu skewers, braised short rib, and black bean hummus. My only complaint was the club soda in the cocktails was flat. I had to ask twice to freshen it up, and finally I just asked them to bring out the can. Problem solved. Overall, great experience and worth a visit.

Societe Club
02/03/2014

Maybe I'm just getting old and out of touch with what the kids are into these days, but I thought Societe Club was absolutely terrible. Admittedly, I'm not into "clubs" per se, so I went into this one with an open mind, knowing it wouldn't exactly be my cup of tea. There was a line out of the door when we arrived, so luckily we were with someone who had a table booking. Before even entering the place, I was overwhelmed by the smoke; you could cut through it with a butter knife. After fighting, pushing, and bumping my way to our friend's table, I was squeezed into a roped off area. I managed to last for one drink (barely) before I had to head out. (Side note, the line out the door had quadrupled in size in about 20 short minutes.) I couldn't imagine the place getting any more crowded, and not in a good way. I found a peaceful retreat at Nelle Gwynne downstairs...

District Lounge
02/03/2014

District Lounge was fantastic on Thursday night. It's so rare to find an outdoor/rooftop bar with good live music. Maybe impossible… The band was excellent, playing all kinds of music. The shisha was very good, and the overall atmosphere was incredibly unique. It's located on top of the Capital Club in DIFC, so can be a bit tricky getting up there. It was pretty quiet when we arrived just after 9:00 p.m. but by 11:00 it was packed.

Cravin' Cajun
02/03/2014

Cravin' Cajun is awesome! Great vibe, excellent food and drink, and surprisingly well priced. I had the chicken & waffles, and they were just magical. The Old Fashioned with Maker's Mark was a sweet treat and shockingly cheap at AED 34. Add in good live music and you have yourself a real winner. (Btw, the live band plays every night except Sundays through April 3.) Haven't see another authentic Cajun joint in town. You can bet I will be back here again. And soon!

ICON Bar & Lounge
27/02/2014

Great spot for the Media City lunch crowd. They have a nice lunch special menu with everything from lamb shank to steak to fried salmon, each for AED 59. I went out on a limb and opted for these 3 mini burgers. One beef, one shrimp, and one chicken tikka. Not bad. Not amazing but pretty good. This place has a lot of potential. I hope they can do something cool with it soon.
