Kauai

As soon as I saw the initial reviews for this place, I knew I had to check it out, and so I did. Twice! First time I went for breakfast, a light but filling breakfast burrito washed down with an excellent coffee. Next time I went for lunch and had a chicken burrito wrap, again hitting the spot, this time washed down with a superb mango tango smoothie. I only wish this place was walking distance from my apartment so I wouldn't have to put up the the rudest, most surly security guards I have ever encountered at the Park Island restaurant car park. The guy demanded to know exactly how long I would be, which restaurant I was going to and also wanted my mobile number. This is a car park dedicated to customers of the restaurants and this horrible man is behaving like this to their customers, treating them like criminals. It really was rather unpleasant.

Boon Coffee

This is a new coffee place in JLT that specialises in organic Ethiopian coffee. The place is tiny, tucked away inside 1 Lake Plaza building which is a shame as they will get no passing traffic there at all, especially as you almost have to walk through Public Cafe to get there. I walked over to specifically try it and I struggled to find it. Anyway, it was worth the effort as the coffee was superb but the only food they seem to do is pastries and cakes so it's going to be a struggle to justify going there at lunchtime, especially when the temperatures are rising and I feel too ashamed to ask them to deliver a single skinny latte. If you're a coffee connoisseur, it's definitely worth a visit.

Le Pirate Restaurant

This is a cool new restaurant at Orra Marina. The decor is great, the outdoor tables are shaped like a boat and all the staff are dressed like pirates. Although it's a seafood restaurant, it's a bit annoying that they only do seafood, there's not a single item on their menu that does not include seafood. It's also a bit annoying that there's a lack of simple dishes like sandwiches, their menu seems to be heavily geared towards massive platters. I opted for the cheapest main course they had as I just wanted a light-ish lunch, Penne with Salmon for 45 Dhs. It was very good to be fair, as was the coconut and pineapple juice. Service was first class, especially giving me a vintage style telescope to spy on people while I waited! They do Starbucks coffee too.

The Pet Shop
12/04/2014

Went out for a drive to this place yesterday, the shop is massive and best of all, it doesn't deal in "pedigree" cats/dogs, you want one, you adopt one. I was more interested in the aquarium section, it's also huge with a fantastic selection and knowledgeable staff. Definitely worth a trip if you need some pet supplies.

Pinocchio Italian Restaurant
08/04/2014

Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in Dubai, especially in JLT. Pinocchio, is different however. I was a bit apprehensive when I looked at their menu, all of their sandwiches are 42 Dhs which is expensive no matter how good they may be. I decided against that though and instead went for one of their daily specials, Squid Ink Tagliatelle with Seafood. To put it simply, it was sublime. It was packed full of mussels, clams, squid and massive prawns, and the pasta was perfectly al dente which is rare in these parts. 56 Dhs was a fair price too, although a bit much to be spending on lunch everyday. I certainly look forward to sampling more of their menu very soon.

Star Lake

Nice place thus, nothing at all fancy on the menu, just well executed Chinese food at a good price. Felt like I was dining in Chinatown in London, it's that kind of place, seems to be family owned and operated too which I like. The interior is pretty funky too, a little bit of a Dragonmart Gaucho theme going on.

San Sation
05/04/2014

Ok sandwich place situated round the back of Dorra Bay overlooking the Marina. The view is fantastic and a great place to sit and relax. The food is ok, my chicken burger wasn't awful but not really good enough to entice me back. All if the ingredients seemed to be the cheapest possible other than the chicken itself. If you're promoting your restaurant as specialising in sandwiches, not having decent bread is not good enough.

Mugg & Bean
05/04/2014

This place is in the Waitrose mall in Al Thanya, from the outside it just looks like a non-descript coffee shop but they actually have a very comprehensive and impressive menu. I had the paprika chicken sandwich which was loaded with chicken, bacon, Brie, rocket, tomato and a tangy sauce. Tasted really good although the bread was a bit tough and eventually got discarded. The breakfasts looked amazing though so a good chance I'll be back to try those!

Baguette Burger
05/04/2014

Dropped by this place overlooking the JLT park a few weeks ago. The name is a bit weird, I guess they serve burgers in baguettes although I can't fathom why anyone would think that's a good idea. I had the steak sandwich which was just ok, seemingly one of the few dishes in their menu that doesn't come with fries despite being one of the most expensive.

Canvas Restaurant
05/04/2014

This is a new restaurant that has opened right by the Marina underneath Lotus Hotel Apartments. Nice location with a large shaded outdoor seating area that will be a popular shisha hangout. I had the grilled salmon with came with mango salsa, veg and rice. It was tasty enough and at 45 Dhs, pretty good value for money. I also had one if the best lemon and mint juices I've had in the area. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
