The Pet Shop
12/04/2014

Went out for a drive to this place yesterday, the shop is massive and best of all, it doesn't deal in "pedigree" cats/dogs, you want one, you adopt one. I was more interested in the aquarium section, it's also huge with a fantastic selection and knowledgeable staff. Definitely worth a trip if you need some pet supplies.

Pinocchio Italian Restaurant
08/04/2014

Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in Dubai, especially in JLT. Pinocchio, is different however. I was a bit apprehensive when I looked at their menu, all of their sandwiches are 42 Dhs which is expensive no matter how good they may be. I decided against that though and instead went for one of their daily specials, Squid Ink Tagliatelle with Seafood. To put it simply, it was sublime. It was packed full of mussels, clams, squid and massive prawns, and the pasta was perfectly al dente which is rare in these parts. 56 Dhs was a fair price too, although a bit much to be spending on lunch everyday. I certainly look forward to sampling more of their menu very soon.

Star Lake
08/04/2014

Nice place thus, nothing at all fancy on the menu, just well executed Chinese food at a good price. Felt like I was dining in Chinatown in London, it's that kind of place, seems to be family owned and operated too which I like. The interior is pretty funky too, a little bit of a Dragonmart Gaucho theme going on.

San Sation
05/04/2014

Ok sandwich place situated round the back of Dorra Bay overlooking the Marina. The view is fantastic and a great place to sit and relax. The food is ok, my chicken burger wasn't awful but not really good enough to entice me back. All if the ingredients seemed to be the cheapest possible other than the chicken itself. If you're promoting your restaurant as specialising in sandwiches, not having decent bread is not good enough.

Mugg & Bean
05/04/2014

This place is in the Waitrose mall in Al Thanya, from the outside it just looks like a non-descript coffee shop but they actually have a very comprehensive and impressive menu. I had the paprika chicken sandwich which was loaded with chicken, bacon, Brie, rocket, tomato and a tangy sauce. Tasted really good although the bread was a bit tough and eventually got discarded. The breakfasts looked amazing though so a good chance I'll be back to try those!

Baguette Burger
05/04/2014

Dropped by this place overlooking the JLT park a few weeks ago. The name is a bit weird, I guess they serve burgers in baguettes although I can't fathom why anyone would think that's a good idea. I had the steak sandwich which was just ok, seemingly one of the few dishes in their menu that doesn't come with fries despite being one of the most expensive.

Canvas Restaurant
05/04/2014

This is a new restaurant that has opened right by the Marina underneath Lotus Hotel Apartments. Nice location with a large shaded outdoor seating area that will be a popular shisha hangout. I had the grilled salmon with came with mango salsa, veg and rice. It was tasty enough and at 45 Dhs, pretty good value for money. I also had one if the best lemon and mint juices I've had in the area. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

La Postreria
05/04/2014

This is one of the new restaurants at The Beach at JBR, we found a table with a lovely view over the beach. Everything on the menu is a bit pricey, we had the trio of Arabic dips for 38 Dhs to start which came with the same cheap bread you get with a 10 Dhs tub of hummous in Satwa. Mrs Gavtek's grilled octopus was tasty enough if lacking in side dish quantity, my 114 Dhs seafood paella was horrendous, nothing more than a dangerously salty, gloopy soup. 300 Dhs for 2 main courses, some hummous and 2 juices, safe to say I won't be back.

King Of Philly Cheesesteak
01/03/2014

Located in the same cluster as Bonnington Hotel in JLT, this is a little gem of a place, especially if your experience of a cheesesteak is limited to Subway or Charley's. This is as close to the real thing as you're going to get in this part of the world. Avoid if you're on a diet, this is simple fat boy fun.

Cucina Mia
27/02/2014

Had a really nice meal here last night. I had the Grilled Octopus which was excellent. Mrs Gavtek loved her pasta dish with mushroom cream sauce so I'll take her word on that as mushrooms are disgusting. Only down side was the lack of drinks menu of any kind. I hate having to play 20 questions with the waiter, I just can't see what they gain from withholding information from customers. I settled for the water. But no local water, only fancy pants Italian water. Grr.
