Cafe Bateel has good coffee. I had a soy milk cappuccino today and love the fact that they give you a date with it. Nice touch.

Cielo Sky Lounge
19/03/2014

Awesome new rooftop lounge located along the Creek. Enjoy stunning views while sipping on a cocktail and dancing to funky house music. It's quite similar to 360, although Cielo is more upscale, larger and has food. I noticed they bring out the sparklers when a bottle is ordered which leaves the impression that this more of a party venue and offers guests tables with bottle service. It will be interesting to see how they transform the venue during the hot months. Looking forward to going back to Cielo to try the food.

Laduree
09/03/2014

Amazing macaroons! Laduree is probably the most popular macaroon shop in Paris and I'm happy to find we have one in Dubai Mall! These fancy ones I took a picture of have some kind of gold on the top. They taste great and make a great gifts.

I scream you scream, we all scream for ice cream!! I visited the London Dairy stand that's part of the Dubai Food Festival that was happening at kite beach. How good does my ice cream look????? It tasted as good as it looks! AED33 for two scoops in a waffle cone.

The Dubai Mall
19/02/2014

I don't get to stroll Dubai Mall often as I live closer to MOE. I had some time to kill between meetings so I walked and walked and walked some more. I had a blister from all the walking. This mall is so massive! It's very easy to get lost. I took photos on my iphone of my parking spot and the entrance I came in so I could find my way back. I like how the mall is sort of sectioned by interest. The technology stuff is on one floor, as is the baby stuff and furniture. The high end fashion is also separate. This is helpful if you know where you're going. I also noticed some new shops and restaurants. I enjoyed my few hours in Dubai Mall and I didn't even cover the entire area. I think you need to discover this mall over 2-3 days! Great to send people visiting as it'll keep them occupied for hours!

Gateaux Cakes and Pastries
19/02/2014

I was recently put in charge of bringing cakes to the office for employees' birthdays. I normally go to Baskin Robbins but the JBR branch only takes cash and I didn't have any and was pressed for time. (Side note, how can BR not have a credit card machine ugh!) So, I took my business elsewhere and crossed the street to buy a cake from Gateaux in the Al Sahab residential building. I illegally parked in front of Al Sahab and ran in. The chocolate cake I selected is the same as in the photo on yadig :) It was AED150 and they even gave me free candles. The cake was delish and the whole process was quick and easy.

Carrefour
19/02/2014

I had to stock up for a BBQ last Friday so made a trip to Carrefour MOE. I arrived at 9am just as they were opening and I was shocked to see a queue of people eagerly waiting for the supermarket to open. I don't visit Carrefour often as typically I thought the quality of their products was poor compared to Waitrose.

I was happy to see they had a nice selection of fresh fish and vegetables on display. I took a number and joined the queue at the seafood section. Once my number was called, the manager took my order of 3 local Snapper and 20 jumbo prawns and sent it to the team in the back to fillet the fish and to clean the prawns. I was asked to collect my seafood in 25 mins I cruised around the produce section and found banana leaves and all varieties of lettuce imported from various countries. I really didn't expect Carrefour to have such a wide selection.

I decided to investigate further and check out their Organic selection. Unfortunately they don't have a big selection but they do have some Carrefour brand of organic dried goods that are significantly cheaper than items at Organic Foods & Cafe.

Overall, a nice experience in this hypermarket. I also picked up some recycled paper plates that are high quality and nicer than plastic. If I did big grocery runs weekly, I would join the Fri/Sat early morning shoppers as it gets very busy on the weekends.

Katsuya by Phillipe Starck
19/02/2014

WOW! 5 stars for food & service!

We were in a hurry to catch a movie and told the waiter to rush our order and he did! We were in and out in 25 mins and there food was excellent. You must try their yellowtail sashimi topped with fried onion - it's out of this world. The rolls were all very fresh with lovely presentation. The rock shrimp was tasty, altho it had a little too much mayo in the dressing for my liking - I ended up wiping half of it off. If you're a sushi fan, you need to make a stop at Katsuya in Dubai Mall.

Saudi German Hospital
20/01/2014

I went to the emergency at the Saudi German Hospital in the Greens last night for a DVT issue. I was referred by my GP at Emirates Hospital. The hospital is new, clean and well-organized. I arrived at 19:30 and saw the first doctor within 30 mins. The first doctor said he would bring in someone else who had more knowledge regarding DVT. 10 minutes later the 2nd doctor arrived. This doctor asked me a series of questions, took did a blood test and wanted to admit me for 5 days. Over diagnosing seems to be common in this region. I said no and asked for alternative options. An hour later another doctor came in and said he was replacing the 2nd doctor as his shift was over. After explaining my case AGAIN he decided to bring in the on-call vascular surgeon. I appreciated this, however my overall complaint was that the doctors didn't thoroughly explain what was going on and the process. I had an assigned nurse come in and start hooking me up to an IV, taking blood etc... without telling me what it's for. It can be scary when you don't know what's happening., especially when there is a language barrier between patient, nurse and doctor. I was finally discharged at 22:30.

On the bright side, the follow up is good and the registration & discharge is easy. They love using text messages. I had one for thanking me for the opportunity to serve me and one for my next appointment. I haven't had to go to any other hospital in the UAE (thankfully). If I had to go to emergency again, I would go to Saudi German.

U Bora Tower
21/11/2013

I visited this mixed residential and commercial tower today in Business Bay. I was impressed with the views from the office I had a meeting at which was located on the 21st floor. The decor of the building is very modern and the security to enter the office towers is strict. You need to leave an ID with the reception and take a swipe card. I was also impressed that I could park easily and for free. The actual layout/design of the parking is totally confusing (why can't builders in Dubai ever get parking right?) but all in all a good experience. Apparently the building is 50% occupied and that's why the parking is easy.

Decker Believe this building is called "U-Bora Tower". Is it the tall green glass building at the back of Biz Bay?
